6 Museums Free in Orlando on Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day

It’s been a little over a month since the kids went back to school. While summer may be expensive with summer camps and vacations, the start of the school year comes with its own costs such as school supplies, uniforms, school activities. So when something FREE comes along, we definitely try to take advantage of it.

This Saturday is Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Live! Museum goers all over the country get in free to participating museums. So if there is a museum that you have been dying to try, or weren’t certain how your kids would like it so didn’t want to spend the money, then Saturday is your day.

The Orange County Regional History Center is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and a member of the American Alliance of Museums. The History Center includes a museum in a historic courthouse, the collection of the Historical Society of Central Florida, the Joseph L. Brechner Research Library, the Emporium Gift Shop, and Heritage Square park. It advances its mission through wide-ranging programs, permanent and traveling exhibits, and limited-run exhibitions from other prestigious institutions.

Goldenrod

Goldrenrod Historical Museum

The Goldenrod Historical Museum allows visitors to stroll through our community’s history and see life as an early settler where cattle and citrus were the mainstays. Watch our area become the thriving community of Goldenrod through pictures and memorabilia. The museum also pays tribute to the building’s original use as a fire station and the early firemen who served our community.

Art & History Museums – Maitland is home to five museums celebrating contemporary art and hands-on history through exhibition, events, residencies and education programs. The A&H’s Maitland Art Center was founded as an artist colony in 1937 by visionary American artist and architect, Jules André Smith, and is the only National Historic Landmark in the four-county area of Central Florida. The five museums are: Maitland Art Center, Maitland Historical Museum, Telephone Museum, Waterhouse Residence Museum and Carpentry Shop Museum, located on two campuses.

Winter Park

Founded in 1961, the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens is home to an art collection created by award-winning, internationally recognized, Czech-born sculptor Albin Polasek. The museum’s primary exhibit is American representational sculpture, with over 200 works by Polasek. These are featured throughout the artist’s home and gardens located on scenic Lake Osceola.

The museum also features a gallery space with rotating exhibits. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of only 30 members of the National Trust’s Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios.
